Remembering that these numbers are shipped -- not sold to consumers. So some "holiday sales" may already be "pre-counted." Also, I wonder how many people who would have bought during the holidays went and purchased a slim with the price drop. Finally, the software may not be coming out in the fiscal year sufficient to move consoles. GT5 will have less than one month in this fiscal year in Japan -- and no more than that (if that) in the rest of the world. FF will have a full quarter to sell in Japan. But unless everyone in Japan who buys FF games (3M for FF X, 2.5M for X-2 and XII) buys a PS3, then the hardware sales are not going to skyrocket.

good point.. but it didn't happen with X360when they dropped the price last yr, why u think it will effect PS3? moreover PS2 install base is much larger than XBOX install base.. so Sony has more customers to offer PS3 to upgrade from PS2 or if they have gone to X360 than if there X360 RROD than they can give PS3 another chance... so it make me believe that PS3 will sell a lot more than the numbers XBOX achieved last yr.
