Can you name how often a spin off that is completely different in terms of genre and gameplay and such outsells the main games? Especially one that is of quality. Spin offs outselling main games isn't impossible - see Persona vs. SMT sales, or ToS: DotNW vs. ToV sales, but at least those games are similar to the main games and are quality...

I can't name that many because I don't think it happens that often, but Dead Space is a recent example even though that did bad. Final Fantasy Dissidia, XII: Revenant Wings and Crisis Core are good examples of spin-offs that sold well, but they did not beat the original series.
Final Fantasy Tactics outsold Final Fantasy I,II,III and equal to FF V back in the day.
