I say you push the system. Stop coddling it with breaks and cool surfaces and back massages. If it's gonna break you want it to happen before the warranty expires!
Try it with different TVs, and different PS2 cables if you have them. Try unplugging your cable TV cable to see if the buzzing stops (that problem happens to me sometimes). If none of that causes any change, then it may well be the PS2 that's the problem.
As for the game freezing, it might just be a dirty lens or disc. I doubt very much that it's caused by the PS2 being old.
