Analysts' optimistic projections for HD adoption before the recession was 50% of households would have a HDTV late 2009/early 2010; and it is likely that the recession may have slowed that down so HD adoption may not reach 50% until late 2010. On top of that, owning a HDTV doesn't mean that people are necessarily HD-Snobs and many HDTV owners would be happy to get (roughly) DVD quality streaming video through the Wii.
While there would be some people who would reject the concept of the Wii service for not being HD, I suspect that the majority of those people would not own a Wii and would therefore not be in a position to matter towards the success of the Wii Netflix service.
The more interesting question is whether Wii owners actually want increased media functionality on the Wii ...
