That's an interesting point, but I would argue (for me at least) that it's helpful to use if people want to know what your gamertag is, and it's interesting to see what other people are playing.

Oh, no doubt. For that reason it's excellent advertising, but it's still a form of advertising. Hell, I like gamertags! If I had my 360 hooked up to the net more often, I'd have mine on display too.
