I'm pretty sure we saw the gameplay at last E3.

I know that Nintendo doesn't announce things in advance, exactly how NSMBW was done. But that's not always the case. Look at the new Metroid.
At E3, it felt like Miyamoto and Nintendo were already concerned about slowing sales and felt they had to maintain core interest by showing a new Zelda, even when all they had was a painting. It wasn't even at Nintendo's presscon, it was shown secretly (I think).

To me, the implied context here was, "I know you core fans are a little frustrated, just remember that we have Zelda."
