Why shouldn't they? You're not allowed to drive it, whether you have the keys or not. You would think that after having to pay $1450 in fees you wouldn't even want to risk it, they are just doing what they believe is best. If anything they are doing you a favour. You obviously can't be trusted with the keys as you were driving whilst banned.

Oh and on a side note, I have very little respect for people who drive drunk, it's a stupid thing to do and I hope you have learnt your lesson and wont do it again. I had three friends that died in a drink driving accident once, not cool.

Unless you're feeling suicidal and homicidal, then I don't see what rationale people would have for drinking and driving...

Well it isn't like people drive drunk because it is fun or for the sake of doing it... Would you consider somebody who had a beer or two with their dinner a danger?

I would consider it a danger if someone was drinking recklessly and were planning on driving... and if they did go out and drive in their state.

Even if you said that there's no intent, it's a matter of accountability. In some accidents, you may have very little power to take action to prevent the event, and in others you would have had the most power. In cases that that the person had the most power and prior knowledge to take action is held accountable (manufactuers and producers being responsible for their products to break, even if they had no intent).

Therefore I see DUI as a case where the driver is accountable.

What if the drunk person got hit by somebody who ran a red light?

I totally believe in accountability, and that is why I hate how people pin it on drinking. Any accident where a driver is drunk, they have all the blame put on them simply because they were drunk. That is not logical by any means. I think there are other factors to be considered.
