It's a new beat-em-up in 2009 that has been critically panned, has a weird artstyle and generated next to no hype.

How was this unexpected again?

It was probably assumed it would do well based on the hype from Madworld (they switched the gameplay before that game was released).

Madworld actually had an advertising budget which was used on television and online, Spyborgs had webisodes?

It's not only that but Madworld was actually hyped enough and was decent enough to get people to buy it.

Yeah, marketing is something developers often forget with the Wii, even though they wouldn't dare forget it with HD systems.

RE 4 Wii and RE UC got hyped and sold well. CTYD and Okami got little marketing (reviews of the former wouldn't matter, since MK Wii got worse reviews than Madworld, and that change nothing), and sold just niche sales (and would be flops if they were on HD systems).

RE4 and RE UC aren't new IP.  Also, reviews matter when the intended audience places value in them.  Mario Kart has a 83 metacritc if memory serves and Madworld has 81.

Pixel Art can be fun.
