In my opinion, features like achievements/leaderboards, digital distribution and user generated content are great additions to a game but in no way represent a reason to buy or play a game on their own; and in many cases the focus on these elements at the expense of a solid core gameplay experience make a game far less desirable.

At the moment my favourite example of this is Guitar Hero World Tour ... The Wii version was far more feature rich than Guitar Hero 3, but the core gameplay was far worse and as a result the game wasn't as good.
