Is 3D Mario doomed?

Personally when I think of Nintendo or want to play Nintendo games I prefer the old school 2d Mario. My gf has a Wii and I bought her SMG for it which was cool for a bit but its just not the same. Mario should be a 2d game. Some games aren't meant to evolve as much, and Mario is one of em.
