I seemingly interpreted it as you did when playing the game.  When I first heard of Ueda's interpretation, I was pretty bummed.

It is pretty much the biggest bummer in gaming!

I was bummed out when a few posters ruined the ending.

Ah well, I would probably still tear up when I play it...
