the purpose of the source engine isnt poly count. Its the scalability of the engine.

....Which is pretty wank by todays standards. I'm referring to the OP praising HL2s graphics saying it looks great nowadays, and while it does look fine, it's nothing on modern games e.g. STALKER, FEAR, Crysis.
For scale, Operation FLashpoint 2 has a draw distance of 30km, and a better poly count. All I'm trying to say is that the OP's original comment just isn't true when you look at the graphical quality of modern games.

Well HL2 looks much better than bioshock, cod4, and r2 in my opinion

I would understand it if you throw in Episode 1 or Episode 2, but the original HL2 really doesn't come close to Bioshock, CoD4 or R2
|
Replay it, it definately looks better than BIOSHOCK (whose textures are comparable to ps2 games when up close), COD4 (let not even talk about the textures, since its more of a huge pixel), and the best looking game of the 3 "R2" id say they are on par, but HL2 takes it for the fact it is so smooth.
