Killeryoshis will tell you to buy both and should be here any minute I reckon... I had the same thoughts as you, and I went straight to Pikmin 2, but I liked it so much that I think I will buy the original sometime in the near future.
I think you'll be fine if you want to go straight for 2 gameplay-wise. I had no trouble.
