Honestly, neither blu-ray nor HD-DVD had a shot. There was no win for blu-ray because a format war is a race to the mainstream, not fight to the last man standing. And as I mentioned, the way films and TV shows are done is why the higher resolution is not sufficient. Basically they are movies that look slightly prettier. The writing isn't any better. The acting isn't any better. The plots aren't any better. What did DVD have over VHS? You never had to rewind it. There was no need to stick it in an HDTV (and make sure you use the right cables, and make sure the TV settings are correct). It was inherent. If something is to top DVD, it needs to be more convenient, not better. Which CD successor won that format war? DVD Audio, or Super Audio CD? (I hope you know that's a trick question.) |
There were other advantages of DVD over VHS which jumpstarted its success... mainly the ability to watch special features like director commentaries, making-of documentaries etc. Then there were some other minor advantages like durability, better picture quality and subtitles and audio in different languages on the same disc.
Of all of those, Blu-Ray only has better picture quality. No doubt that it can approach DVD in market share at some point, but more due to being close in price at which point it becomes a "why not" purchase.
