Interesting tidbit of history there.
When I bought my Wii it came with no game. (Yes, I'm in Japan where there is no pack-in game) I had to buy Wii Sports separately.
I also have Wii Play from buying an extra controller and yeah bundling in Wii Play instead of Wii Sports would have been a terrible mistake. Wii Sports is more fun and intuitive than trying to figure out the games in Wii Play. Wii Sports is definitely a more user friendly and easier to pick up and play game.
