So I won't be completely lost if I haven't played the first one storywise? I may just have to pick this up then.

Well you would need to check up on wikipedia or something for what Freeman's role was in the first one.  You'll still have fun with the game but it's was odd for me playing it with not playing the first one since I wanted to know more about the story.

The story isn't really that interesting or fleshed out. H-L2 is more about the characters, and HL1's story basically takes place in two parts. The beginning, and the end of the game, with some hints along the journey if you look really close.

Of course, there is a mythos behind the games, but you won't understand that unless you read about it. You certainly won't find out much from actually playing the games. They are more situational based.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
