lvl 40 is very high for 5-1 - that was probably the reason there was no co-op available
Sage Freke is on the third floor - if you go the stairs down from the 4th you can access the 3f passage he is on (he is in the cell with the strange balls of light)
you'll get the key for his cell in the church by the dredgling up there who is begging not kill him (I guess you already found out you had to kill him anyway huh? ;) )
