Magic is interesting, to get the magic spells you need to on wiimote press down go to skills, after you level you get skill points, select which magic you want to master.
I recommend picking one type honestly because you unlock other magics later if you follow one attribute line it’s easier.
As for combat, you can lock on to enemies, your only hope is to do the avoid trick which is to go thief first to get avoid then after maxing it go back to mage and have it equipped on passives. Dodging should be easier.
I’ve seen online mages though and trust me that guy was kicking serious butt, so mages aren’t under powered.
We ran into an area with level 45 enemies and he merced them all with some area holy spell.
