Surely it would have been bigger risk to Sony to price it at $900.
Pricing it at $600 wasn't the risk, it was the neccessary thing they had to because of the risk they took. The risk Sony took was exactly the same risk they always take, which is trying to introduce a new format of media storage.
This time it at least worked (unlike betamax/minidisc/UMD etc) even if they did lose all that money.
