The could do two things: creating a new type of Mario games OR improving one of the best platformers of all time (NSMB). They chose the second. The art is greatly improved ( you're blind if you can't see it), now it's a real 2.5 d (the originale NSMB was too similar with 2d), the graphic is colorful and usedful (okay, it doesn't require so much hardware, but it's not a wrong point).

They added the multiplayer, the new Demo-play-mode (which is one of the best new features, now they have the possibility to create difficult games and everyone will be able to enjoy them), a lot of new levels and the SMW's bosses (Koopalings).

If you don't like this game, don't buy or play it, but it's impossible to criticize it because of graphic or gamplay (saying that it's a DS port is incredibly stupid).

My main gripe is the art direction with the chars. They should make it in this style:

 

 

meaning something like this:

 

I just think it fits more than the psudo 3d (or full 3d) char models they've got going.
