We're talking RPG's in here, don't go out-genre please. In most JRPG's you don't have that possibility, and since you're stuck with different set difficulties, it makes you think and execute different strategies in order to win and progress in the harder battles.

In most WRPG's, and Oblivion too, you can approach the game in many different settings, and in the harder settings, you can't possibily hack your way to victory, and in Oblivion's case, even if you play on the lower difficulties using a mage character, using that same strategy will lead you to your doom.

Why does genre matter in this situation. In games where can win by button mashing, setting the difficulty higher or at the highest setting will make the option obsolete. I was pointing out that you can't use that as an excuse for it. This is almost something that's universal.
