I don't know who Apple was trying to convince with their first comment and so i don't think that Sony's comeback was even that necessary.
If you want to play good handheld games you will buy a DS or a PSP, if you are looking for a phone and thinking about a bit of gaming on the side you might go with Apple. I really don't believe that there is a large overlap in their potential customers.
