Either a full fledged RPG or an MMO would work the best for Nintendo. A full fledged RPG would be what entices RPG fans, and it will defiantly increase hardware sales. Pokemon MMO could allow Nintendo to break into MMOs. Nintendo could create an expanded audience MMO by focusing on elements of WoW that deterred players (such as the time sink nature).
If it's neither of these two, then it's just a way to get more money from Pokemon fans.
