Yeah, their behavior is quite random. You may still want to plant better weapons on them if you have the skills - Ie. Ian's standard SMG won't get you too far when the tougher mooks start showing up.
I never picked Tycho up - only ended up using Ian and Dogmeat, and both got quickly wasted in the later battles. You'll have your work cut out for you if you intend to keep your party members alive until the end.
