Sony: “Conceivable” That PS3 Shortages Occur This Holiday

According to Sony Computer Entertainment of America chief executive Jack Tretton, it’s possible that you will not be able to walk into retailers and pick up a PlayStation 3 this holiday.

“If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages,” Tretton told Reuters in an interview.

Tretton reiterated recent claims made by Sony that their sales have increased nearly 300 percent since the $100 PS3 price drop and introduction of the PS3 Slim.

Not surprisingly, Tretton is optimistic about Sony’s prospects for the rest of the year.

“In a very difficult economy, I couldn’t be more optimistic about our fortunes for the rest of the year and for the future.”

Hopefully for Sony, they’re committed to getting as many PS3’s out there to fill the demand–otherwise, they’re playing with fire if they’re withholding stock to try and increase interest by making it a “hot” product.
