Halo 2's campaign sucked, but the multiplayer was the best available at the time, and it certainly deserved the reviews it got.
Believe it or not, Halo 2 was the biggest boon to online console shooters ever. Halo 1, if I recall, didn't even have an online multiplayer mode. Halo 2's online multiplayer was fanfreakintastic, and made online gaming and XBL what it is today.
Calling it shitty because of its campaign is like calling Counterstrike shitty because it used the Source engine.
