The series is burdened by a horribly cumbersome story. One of the key reasons why RE4 was a better game (still very fond of RE5) was because of the departure from Umbrella and Tyrants and all that. It was a fresh and interesting new start. RE5 screwed the pooch by crossing the Las Plagas and T-Virus streams into some grand nonsensical farce of a plot.
There are too many games, too much backstory to reference, too many things that may be canon or not canon. This series really just needs a reboot.
