MH3 didn't bomb, in fact it performed quite well.
The Monster Hunter franchise is very very popular in the handheld market, the huge sales are a proof (in a similar case, the pokemon franchise is a monster on handhelds too). Because of the On-The-Go feature that handhelds have and consoles don't.
History showed that it's not as good on consoles, with two iterations on PS2 proved to be a lot harder. Adding that the penetration on the west has not been as successful as in Japan (not even on PSP).
by selling over 800.000 units and reaching a million slowly. it has not been a failure on Wii at all.
