^^^ The actual circle strategy dates itself even older than analog/thumb controllers - it goes back to BattleTech/Mechwarrior... People would choose these huge, bulky mechs armed to the teeth that moved like pigs, and the best choice against them was a Kit Fox or Jenner, which literally could run circles around them and disable each section of the bigger mech one part at a time.
