I think it's because people hold it in their hands, and are rougher on it ... squeezing, throwing, etc.

I have treated my old gamecube controller with nothing but love and care. I probably took more care of them than my GF. Now 1 wavebird and 2 original controllers gave out on me leaving me with only 1 wave bird and 2 originals with some of them going out (wonr out rubbers mostly). Playing Brawl is a sad sad day when there's 4 of us.
