Regardless, cumulative numbers show, the PS3 is selling faster.

That's only if you ignore the fact that PS1 launched almost 10-12 months later in the rest of the world outside Japan, so for almost a year there was one territory accounting for all of PS1's sales, compared to PS3 which had all territories getting the PS3 much faster

I mean, we can nitpick launch times, release dates and the whole nine. The bottomline, the PS3, in total consoles sold in 2 years and 10 months is selling faster than the PS1 was at 2 years and 10 months into it's life.

@ Avinash.

This.

Ok, lets say for the sake of moving the discussion forward that it is the third fastest

But when you compare it to the PSP, which it is tracking a few million under, you see that the trend is for large, but short lived spikes in sales, so yeah even if its selling well at the moment it doesn't seem like it'll be sustained

I agree, this time next year the PS3 won't be at 50 million, make this whole PS3 > PS1 debate a bit pointless.

At that point, probably not. But this time next year isn't the same time frame as when there were 50mill PS1s shipped. March of 1999 is 4.5 yeasr after the release of the PS1. It'll beMarch 2011 by that time for PS3, can PS3 be at 5mill by then, not impossible.

The current order of things though, the PS3 is ahead.

He does have a point though, ok on paper it launched in 94. But it didn't launch in the west for a year after the Japan laucnh. Something to prove that the PS1 is ahead of PS3 at the same point in time, which I HATE. Is alligned launchs.
