well, for this gen at least,
Ninty has proven with Wii and DS ads that they knew VERY WELL the market they are dealing with
Making ads focusing on the family playing together or woman having fun with Brain Training was very clever.
Sony needed hardcore targeted ads but they have produce crappy stupid ads : FAIL
they started to make better ads with the 40gb and 399$ price point :

(Sony are selling their console at loss and it is directly eating their marketing budget)
