Number of weeks since launch each console or a console had a SKU at or below the mass market price of $300:
xbox 360= since launch, approx. 225 weeks wii= since launch, approx. 140 weeks ps3= 2 weeks |
$299 is definitely not mass market pricing.
What it used to be, was the debut price for Playstation consoles, which went a long way in helping the original PS1 sell much faster than the $399 Saturn (debut price) when the console was still considered a strong potential contender for best seller of the generation.
But your point regarding the number of weeks each console has been under $300 is entirely valid. What would be even more interesting would be the breakdowns on each console from the last three generations (number of weeks selling over 500k for example) under $300 including the total number of consoles sold at that price point.
Not that this would provide any sort of accurate projections for the $299 PS3; it would just provide a better indicator as to how large the market is for consoles under $300 as opposed to say $400.
