I don't think they're at a point in which they could reduce heat output and improve airflow enough to release a slim.

I don't think M$ will make the same mistake twice. The original XBox didn't have as many issues. You'd be amazing at what M$ can so with their money. It's all about hiring the right people. If I was them, I would speak to Nintendo's designers. Nintendo's systems are always fairly small and their reliablity surpasses all of Sony's Playstation hardware. I still think M$ will work on a Slim. May not come out until 2011 though, but we'll see.
