Do you think that 2D and 3D Mario platformers are different kinds of games?

No. It's just that 3D mario tends to have not as amazing content. Its more difficult to navigate and the cameras generally suck(I have played SMG). It's far too long in between great set pieces and doesn't maintain interest as well because of it.
