They can't. If you make money, you have to announce it. If not, the SCE and IRS will nail them. Userbase is just something made up to spin sales. You can't do that when announcing financial results.

No, because some still look at some screenshots, and declare "it looks like something from the N64" (it's clear they haven't looked at some N64 games in a while). That's Wii owners, not HD fanboys.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
