Completely irrelevant point. It is generally agreed that Kutaragi is an excellent engineer but, unfortunately, a very poor "beancounter". He did overengineer the original PS3 by using two cell processors and building an entire manufacturing chain for the PS3 (essentially in his plan, Sony would build all components by themselves). When it became clear that this dual-cell system could not work, the shit hit the fan and the whole manufacturing idea crumbled - ultimately leading to a unplanned loss of at least $2b. From then on the PS3 architecture and manufacturing model basically switched into panic mode and that is what cost him the job ultimately. (The old-fashioned way of "firing someone" in Japan was the so-called "window-job". Employees no longer neede would get a desk in an office where they would read newspapers all day until retirement). |
Wait a second here. Do you mean to tell me that the cell processors actually cost more than the Blu Ray, which before the PS3 came out averaged around $600-1000? Sonys initial losses were because of Blu Ray and they expected it to be so. This is why they were slow with gaming until the HD format war was over. Sony knew from the very beginning that the PS3's exceptance would be a long and hard fought battle. The price cuts and financial bleeding that they are going through today are a testament to that. People need to stop blaming Kutaragi for a boardroom decision Sony made with other companies to ensure the survival of Blu Ray.
