They don't. They don't have to; they're raised to assume it of all men. It's correct often enough to be an important protective measure, though it's not without collateral damage. This is why the most important rule to remember when dealing with women is don't be creepy. Sometimes, it's obvious enough that men can also tell it from normal conversation. By this point, the women normally already know.
