I was thinking about this and I really think they should go back to anchient times. Age of Empires 1 difficult to play with the pathfinding being as frustratingly dumb as it is. Age of Empires 2 is still quite playable imo, and I still play Mythology and 3.
Alternatively, they could incorporate the previous games into a half-Empire Earth type game. Not sure about that though.
