yes, the controls for the brush are frustrating at first because it's kinda unforgiving on how exact it has to be, but after you play it a few hours, you'll get used to them and start to like them.
for some tips if you get the game, when you hold down the b button to open the painting screen, you can press down a to free draw, and hold down c(or was it z?) to draw a straight line, which is good for slashing enemies/objects and a few other things.
