Um, I define popularity by just what it means, most known. You're telling me that the NES and PS2 aren't THE most known consoles of all time?

By that definition, Hitler would be one of the most popular historical figures....

  • popular - regarded with great favor, approval, or affection especially by the general public; "a popular tourist attraction"; "a popular girl"; "cabbage ...
  • popular - carried on by or for the people (or citizens) at large; "the popular vote"; "popular representation"; "institutions of popular government"
  • popular - (of music or art) new and of general appeal (especially among young people)

The second and third one are different contexts.

The DS is/will be the most popular console of all time. The NES has a significant place in history and in gamers minds, but considering how Wii is tracking, Wii is far more popular. Even relative to the population (which hasn't increased enough to make the NES relatively more popular in the US).

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.
