I firmly believe that Wii has the capability to be able to meet or excceed the Xbox 1 in terms of Online. As far as I can tell, the Wii, just like the original xbox, cannot patch games, and both do not have a running "Operating system" when playing games. Consider Wii also has Wiiconnect24, Wii's online can surpass the Xbox 1. Here's how:

1. The Wii OS must be updated.
A. Remove the SD Card Menu.
B. Stop faking the SD transfer, and instead read directly from the SD card a la GH5.
C. Expand the Wii channels to 20 pages.
D. Keep the SD card menu utility in Data Management>Channels>SD CARD so that no fridge cleaning will be done. When internal space runs out of memory, it will automatically transfer it to the SD card.

Results of A-D: Wii memory can be expanded to 64.5gb, and there will be no difference from running a app from the internal memory and from the SD card, as both will be run from the main Wii Channels page.

E. Replace the SD card menu spot with a picture of your Mii.
F. When the Mii is clicked, a popup menu will appear, showing the last 5 updated Miis, which will represent your friends.
G. Next to your top 5 updated friends, it will display the App/Game/Channel they are playing, and what time they started(this is COMPLETELY possible, because how else does the Wii know what to display in "Today's Accomplishments"? Just record that onto the Online Profile).
H. When the cursor is over the Mii, you will have the option to Message them(an envelope icon), or talk to them via Wii Speak(Telephone Icon). The telephone icon will simply bring the user to the Wii Speak Channel.
I. Expand the amount of Wii friends to 200. The message board will stay the same, except the speed in which mesaages are received will increase. Option to "make a message" from the Message board will be erased, and only the choice to make a memo will stay. Adding friends will be the same way(adding friends' Code).

Results of E-I: It is now easier to connect to your friends.

J. All system Channels (Photo, Mii, Shop, etc) will have a new Wii Menu. When you first click the Wii Menu, it will show the default Wii Menu, Reset buttons. However, if you press +, you will go to the "friends" list that is in a similar fashion to F(Yes, you can tell what they are playing). However, instead of having a Phone or a Message, clicking anywhere on the line will transform the list into a Text box, where you can Instant message anyone playing a Unified online game(See #2), or using the wii OS(Just rip the tech from Pictochat, but allow us to use a Keyboard as well). Press + again, and you will have a replica of your message board. Press + again to return to the default page.
K. All WW/VC games will be updated to support this menu.

Results of J-K: All system channels will have unified online.

2. All Wii games after Jan 1st 2010 will support unified online.
A. Same menu will be ripped from Part 1. J-K for unified games.
B. Games will have mandatory online for any games with multiplayer, and any games with online must support Wii Speak.
C. All Unified games will have a Green Nintendo wifi logo to help stop confusion.

Results of 2: You still don't know?

3. Wiiconnect24 expanded.
A. On the other side of a clock, there will be an icon that flashes ala the wii message board(when you get a message)
B. When you click it, it will tell you the recent updates, for example, New songs on RB2, New stages on Modern Warfare, A new update, New channels, etc. Instead of having Ninty send you a message, the updates panel will simply be updated, and when you click a "headline" you can read for more information. They can also take you directly to the game to download aforesaid content.
C. The Wii will update while in standby mode, so at least once a week, you will be alerted to new content/updates on the fly. You will know when it flashes blue.
