Just so you know, this is complete revisionist history (other than the fact that the PSP came out slightly later). The PSP was expected to dominate by basically everyone, and the PSP saw overwhelming third party support at the beginning. Metal Gear Solid? Monster Hunter? Grand Theft Auto? I'm still not sure the DS has any major third party franchises that stand up to that assault.
The DS has instead managed to best a competitor that most assumed would crush it based on first party offerings and quirky, unusual third party offerings (Phoenix Wright is a great example). You've got it backwards: the PSP lost despite having a clear advantage in third party support from the beginning.
