Most people I know on services like MSN talk about things like sport, movies, music, going out (organising things), dates, girls, food, work, business, gossip, TV.

Happy news! You can talk about whatever you want!

Worst that can happen is that people will think you are stupid or boring, and they won't answer back.

It's perfectly normal to talk about your interests, whether on a forum or an instant messenger, or on the phone, or .... I'm sure you get my drift. Worst that can happen is that people think you're strange, stupid or boring.

The real advantage of the IM is that it's more intimate. You get to know people, and get to have full responsive conversations with them. That means less hate, less flaming, less irritation and more bonding. Hopefully that will increase the level of understanding on the forum, and decrease the level of flaming.
