The Mayans did not say it would be the end of the world, they said it would be the end of an age. Besides even if they did say that what makes there prediction better than everyone else's? Nothing, that's what, the calender on my netbook finishes at December 31st 2100, does that mean that this is the end of the world? Because my netbook says time does not exist after this point.
I've some of the most outrageous hypotheses for the world ending in 2012 with the most tenuous links to evidence, from unknown planets crashing into ours to the souls of everyone being taken into another dimension.
