I suspect the first clue will be August NPD, and PS3 fans will be ready with a lot of excuses why PS3 got outsold again, mainly they will say slim came out September 1st, when it was actually mostly available on August 25th.

The fact is everything that was "supposed" to push the PS3 to utter domination over 360 in the past failed, whether it was MGS4, prior price cuts, KIllzone 2, etc. Why will slim be any different?

Whilst I agree that "PS3 slim will destroy all!!11111111" is stupid, your OP is flawed.

Firstly, Slim launching in America with a week of August sales is not going to massively spin August NPD in the PS3's favour, so don't pitch it like everyone is expecting it to, so that you can then be smug when it doesn't.

Secondly, the PS3 pricecut in Autumn 2007 certainly did not fail; it helped the PS3 keep toe-to-toe with 360 in the holiday 2007 season despite the launch of Halo 3, and then helped the PS3 to dominate the 360 from Jan 08 until the 360's pricecuts in Sep 08.

Thirdly, comparing the effects of software releases versus pricecuts is embarrassing. As we've seen in 2007 and 2008, pricecuts swing momentum substantially. In contrast, software is, with only a few exceptions, capable of nothing more than a spike.
