If Capcom says they want to ship 2m WW, and says the initial shipment for Japan is 1m, one can assume they wanted to sell significantly more than 1m in Japan. Like, d'uh.
It was expected that the game would be the best-selling third party home console game in Japan so far this gen... They had an initial shipment of 1m units. The last 150K of which are in bargin bins right now. Being the best-selling third party home console game in Japan so far this gen, while it sounds impressive, was not the measure of success for this game.
This is not to say the game is a total failure. It is not a flop by any stretch of the imagination. Bionic Commando sold just a fraction of what was expected. That was a flop. This game could still reach 80%+ of expectations if you include the inevitable special edition, and the game sells decently in the West. And then the PSP remake will probably sell 2.5m in Japan alone.
The game is just not lighting up the charts like some are still pretending it is. |
Just because Capcom expects 2 million doesn't mean that it should reach 2 million. Not even Capcom knew how much of the popularity of the PSP games was gonna transfer to consoles, they just took a guess. The only way it didn't sell well is if Capcom could have done something to make the sales better (i dunno, what do you think?). If this is the best sales they can get on a console, then how can you even call it dissapointing? If we had a history of MH games on consoles selling more than a million I would understand, but we don't.
About the initial shipments, that is retailer expectations. I don't know how many times this has to be said. If the shipments are 500k it doesn't mean that Capcom expected it to sell 500k, it means retailers underestimated the demand for the game. Like, d'uh should be headed in your direction, not ours. If developers would control how many games were shipped every game would be a million seller. The retailers are the ones taking the risk of them not being sold, ot Capcom.

Sure, but Capcom have told investors they plan to sell 2 million copies of the game (at full price I might add). If they don't then they they have missed their target. |
Perhaps we're not talking about investors but we're actually talking about sales potential being met. I don't believe the market is there in Japan for the game to sell that much on any console.
