I think you're right about Halo. I wonder how many X360 owners were introduced to FPS from Halo. With a core group of Xbox owners playing FPS type games, the demand for those types of games grew amongst that community. COD happened to be the next big game for that group of users that got introduced to FPS as a fun genre. On top of that, Call of Duty was done right with 4 player split screen and great online play with a modern setting.

A lot of people I know have Call of Duty Modern Warefare and haven't bothered to finish the actual game because they prefer to play online. These are PS3 owners though...
