Trying to rationalize over-arching prejudices down to a single cause only creates short-sighted stereotypes. Sentiments of any type are caused by a myriad of reasons, not just one universal set of reasons for all people who express them. Generalizing like that only increases antagonistic behaviour.
It's far simpler just to ignore those sentiments that don't align with your own perceptions. Perhaps not the best way to go about things, but seeing as there are so many possible reasons for a given sentiment to be expressed, you'd have quite a task on your hands trying to come to peaceful terms with even just a handful of people who disagree with you.
