17.5 is for the fiscal year not lifetime. That would translate in 22 million total, right? |
Their last fiscal year was 5.84 million, so the total shipped as of the end of September was 13.17 million and the total at the end of March is predicted to be 23.34 million. As a side note, VGChartz has Wii at 12.12 million at the end of September, indicating either 1 million units in the retail channel(which would help with holiday supply) or undertracking in certain regions(I'm not suggesting numbers need to be changed though).
As for holiday supply, the predicted number is 10.17 million units left for October-March. That's roughly 1.7 units per month assuming they'll be producing at a flat rate or about 5.1 million units by the end of the calendar year. If we add this to the 1 million left in the retail channel and subtract the number of units sold so far in October, 605,717 according to VGChartz, there will be about 5.5 million units available between now and the calendar year's end. If they're all sold it'd mean a LTD sales of 18.23 million.
I don't remember reading anything about expectations of twice as many units this holiday as last, just significantly more. And the actual number available last year was 3.19 million according to Nintendo's financial statement.
EDIT: Ummm how'd the quote's background color turn black?
